The purpose of the Seder is teaching our kids faith (emuna) and gratitude to Hashem because He took us out of Egypt. How can we do that every single year, twice? And how can we do it with excitement and happiness? Here we have a few ideas to share:
Activity set for kids 2-10 years old.
1. Make your family´s Passover fun box. You can decorate it with your kids, family or girlfriends. I tried to convey the idea that my family was crossing the parted sea (Yes, we did!) by writing down our names on wood circles and putting my son´s footprints.
2. Make tickets (we did matzo tickets) for the winners -best answers- best behaved, etc, and let them exchange them for prizes at the end of the Seder.
3. Ma-Nishtanah Puppets: Grab wood sticks and paste on each side a picture with the meaning of each question as shown on these 2 pictures. You can make a show with them for your kids when they are singing.
3. Guess who is plague?: Before the seder, talk to some of the participants and assign a plague to each one. Before reading the plagues, the kids need to find WHO is the plague. You can get some of the following 7 items in stores or amazon. You can also add band-aids or a glass with water and wine for Dam/blood, plastic lice or tell someone to scratch his head for Kinim/lice, and a plastic bone or tell someone to pretend to be asleep for Makat Bejorot/death of the firstborns.
We made this puppet for Deber/ death of livestock:
4. Headbands game: The kids receive headbands without seeing the picture on their head. The family tells them clues so they guess the Passover picture they have on their forehead. We made 4 headbands, 2 for kids, 2 for adults (with glitter foam paper, scissors and velcro) and 8 images. The velcro is a good option so each year you can add more images to the game.
5. Put the Tablets on Moshe: This game is exactly like put the tail on the donkey, but with a twist.
We put fabric on the picture and velcro on the Torah so it can be played on Yom Tov, as tape cannot be used. This is my 2-year old Aron holding the tablets and loving the game!
6. Mystery Bag: We put in a bag many things that can be related to Passover. The kid takes out an item and has to make the connection of the item with Passover. The options are endless and could depend on the age and knowledge of the kids at the Seder.
(paste a question mark on the bag)
We chose the following items: 1. Ice cubes (for boils). 2. Lego (slavery). 3. #4 (cups, etc) 4. Star (darkness). 5.Band-aid (blood) 6. Watch (left Egypt on a rush) 7. Broom (Passover cleaning) 8. Ring (the Egyptians gave us their jewelry before leaving) 9. Tambourine (Miriam and women sang and danced as gratitude to Hashem after leaving Egypt) 10. Lice comb (lice) 11. Fly swatter (or anything with a hand, to remind us of ºwith strong hand and outstretched armº Hashem took us out of Egypt)
Remember, many answers could be correct! People are smart and creative.
7. Who wants to be a Millionaire?: This is a question and answers game for older kids. You can find the instructions at their website. We found some of the questions at: http://www.aish.com/h/pes/mm/Passover_Quiz.html
8. And finally, as we wanted this to be a kit that could be used for many years and many people, we added instructions
8. And this, was our final Passover Fun Box
